Jeffrey Kent

Jeffrey Kent was born in Boston, Massachusetts and currently live/works in Baltimore, Maryland. For Kent, founder of the Sub-basement Artist Studios, his commitments to communicating ideas through creative expression, and his dedication to community service, are ideals he learned as a youth. He learned the importance of sharing his time and knowledge with youths; teaching them to set goals and to recognize the possibilities within their grasp. In 2003, Kent founded Sub-Basement Artist Studios a 12,000 sq. ft. underground, artists’ studios and gallery space located in downtown Baltimore (Best Gallery, City Paper 2005). He was awarded Best Visual Artist by Baltimore City Paper 2008 and featured in Baltimore’s 2008 Top Ten Artist list by the Examiner. Kent received his Masters in Fine Art from the prestigious Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art 2010. The artistic vision of Kent is an important contribution to this continuous spectrum of urban cultural expression and identity. Artist Statement: I’m interested in working with many layers of materials in unorthodox manners, merging authenticity with specificity for content. My recent body of work is compiled of mixed media painting, bricolage sculpture, drawing, and video. These artworks explore difficult questions about our roles played within society. Namely, inequality and injustice for some within a community; sexuality and gender; how information is processed, perceived, and assimilated into judgment; and art’s potential as an agent of change.
