Al Zaruba
Al Zaruba works in sculpture, installation, painting, performance, printmaking, video and book art. His childhood took place in Japan, the Philippines and Guam. Later he attended high school in the Panama Canal Zone, (1966-71). In 1971, he moved to Long Beach, California where he completed his AA in Fine Arts. In 1976 he joined the Navy, serving ten years, which culminated with four years as the art director for the Blue Angels. His aviation paintings are included in the National Museum of Naval Aviation and the Pentagon. In 1984, he left the service to attend Otis Parsons Art institute in Los Angeles and a year abroad in Paris. After returning to LA, he graduated with national honors in 1988 and in 1990 the Mt Royal program at MICA. Twice a Pollock Krasner Fellow as well as a Senior Fulbright Scholar to Seoul, Korea (04), Al has exhibited extensively, including in Egypt, France, Ireland, Italy, India and Morocco. His residencies include the Sharpe Space Program, the Tyrone Guthrie Centre and the West Cork Arts Centre in Ireland (2014-15) This spring, he attended the TAC residency in Santa Cruz, CA. He currently teaches at MICA.
