Alec Pugliese
As a child, Baltimore based artist Alec Pugliese was a witness of the transition from an analog to a digital world. Inspired by these major technological advancements, his work frequently mixes the old and the new using stills and videos to convey a personal commentary on past and present life experience. Render Clouds is a series of work specifically created for viewing on Baltimore’s LED Art Billboard. This ongoing series consist of images of clouds taken from popular past and present video games such as Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis and Mega Man 64 for the Nintendo 64. When displayed on the LED Art Billboard the clouds attempt to blend in with the surrounding natural environment. But at the same time the clouds stand on their own, making an obvious juxtaposition between the human-made, computer generated environment and the existing natural elements. The creation of the computer generated clouds comments on humanity’s desire to create a virtual reality that replicates the Earth’s natural systems, and depicts how far we have come from the early days of the first home computers to our commonplace high definition gaming systems.
