Daniela Godoy

dg-profile

An Ecuadorian native, Daniela Godoy earned her B.A. in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Upon graduating college, she joined a research project sponsored by the Institute of Cultural Patrimony of Ecuador (a part of the Ecuadorian government) as a photographer and painter. The project recovered and documented the ritual harvest songs of the Andean Indigenous community Chimborazo region of Ecuador. These songs dated back at least 500 years in Ecuadorian history and were in danger of disappearing. This project reconnected her to her maternal grandmother’s indigenous roots because she was of the indigenous community where this song originates.

Her twenty-piece series of the Jahauy paintings has been exhibited in solo shows both nationally and internationally, starting with her first solo exhibit in Hungary in 2013. Later, the same series traveled through 6 cities in Ecuador in 2014, and finally at the Casa la Cultura of Baltimore, Maryland in 2023. Her photographs have been part of several group shows and publications in New York and abroad. Her pictures and paintings have been featured on numerous book covers and print publications throughout the years. Most recently her portrait made the cover of Gonzalo Godoy: His Legacy, a story of a popular Ecuadorian musician launched on October 1, 2024.

As a participant in the Exposure Award (Documentary Collection), one of her Jahuay portrait photographs was exhibited at the Louvre Museum in Paris in 2015. Her plein air work has recently been exhibited at the Kennedy Center and other paintings reside in private collections, including Harvard’s Office for the Arts.
