Emma Mattson
Emma Mattson is a Baltimore based photographer, filmmaker, and multimedia artist who utilizes medium format color film. She explores emotion in an increasingly human world, often devoid of the human form. Taking photos in the still of the city at night provides a pensive feeling for both the photographer setting up a tripod and standing with the shutter release cable, waiting for the right time to end the exposure, and the viewer reflecting upon them. Automobiles are a main subject matter in recent works that are personified, as they have become strong attachments to human life. Waiting is a main theme in her work, as many of the vehicles sit still in their driveways or are hibernating under the cover of a protective sheet. The atmosphere in her photos is often foggy or right after a rain, which provides a certain quiet time for thoughts to wander. Working as a cage manager in the photo department, she has the opportunity to instruct and exchange ideas and techniques with the next generation of upcoming photographers.
