Freda Mohr

freda-mohr-2

Passionate about fiber artistry and negative space, Freda Mohr creates multimedia jewelry mixing original crocheted lace motifs, intricate trimmings, and colorful beading. Usually beginning with a fiber element like a tassel or abstract lacework, she designs with an eye for casually versatile statement pieces. Writing, music, and art have always been a way for Freda to express herself and find comfort in an otherwise tough life. Not having much growing up but having a crafty mother, she learned a variety of skills and zeroed in on crochet and sewing. Often her new pieces began with the question, “What materials do I already have?” Creating her own clothing and accessories with this in mind was a way for her to participate in fashion without spending, and also allowed her to articulate a sense of resourcefulness through her dress. Requests from friends and strangers for her creations led her to produce in small batches for other people, and to even consider making this her livelihood one day. Making something from nothing is an important part of her jewelry-making process, and a metaphor for her career arc; that her work becomes intricate, flamboyant, and joyful additions to other people’s lives gives her the greatest sense of satisfaction art can bring. Freda lives in Baltimore and is raising two cats with her partner, a fellow artist. She looks forward to a long life making others feel special.
