The oil painter grimeMuted lives in Baltimore City. A struggle with depression led him to become interested in exploring the psyche through art. He makes paintings that integrate inner visionary phenomena that can’t be photographed with elements of the outside world. Impossibly spiraled concave architectures are erected by unknown means in the green seas, and columns of interlocking circles that bewitch the eyes surround suns. The unsettling beauty reveals the intertwining of wonder and horror, and hints at forbidden knowledge of the structure of the viewer’s mind. He wants to inspire people who find the peace-and-love mindfulness movement off-putting to investigate the nature of their minds, for there is plenty to be discovered.
His recent paintings focus on examining the structure of desire in the imagination, or how transitions occur between spontaneously arising geometric form constants (like the famous tunnel with a white light of near-death experiences) and fully realized daydream imagery. They incorporate concepts from mathematics and neuroscience such as vector fields, parametric functions, and retinotopy.
