Judy Tallwing

jt-profile

Inspired by her knowledge of Native American cosmology and mythology, Tallwing’s mixed media paintings are meticulously created with the inclusion of minerals and gems selected for their transcendent properties; many acquired from sacred sites in the natural world. Judy travels “power places” in search of tiny fragments to energize her painting and sculpture. Elements such as copper, silver, turquoise, garnet, prayer and peace pipe ashes, diamond dust, and minute crystal prayer beads are incorporated into her creative process. The origin of her life as a creative is described in her own words: “We didn’t call it art, we called it making things to sell along the road to help the family survive. I love trying to bring the stories I’ve heard to life. Each thing that lives on the earth has its own energy, and I try to put those energies together to create healing.” Judy believes that stories are the most important way we pass on our histories and culture; and are our most powerful means of communicating the broad spectrum of the venerable ‘realm of knowing’. The work of Judy Tallwing is widely collected, and reflects an extended life of art-making. Tallwing paintings and objects are currently on exhibit at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland where she is also included in the museum’s permanent collection. Her works are included in the collections of The Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, and The Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. In 2014, she was invited as Artist-in-Residence at the Halles St. Pierre Museum in Paris, France.
