Monica Ikegwu
I am a Baltimore-based artist and I consider myself a figure painter with a focus directed towards African American portraiture. I earned my BFA in painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art (2020). I am currently enrolled at the New York Academy of Art, to continue my MFA studies in painting. With my work I aim to give people a platform to display themselves in the way that they truly are, without any limitations. I collaborate with people by allowing them to choose their own pose, clothing, and style, to create an image of themselves that is not altered by others. The ideas for my work stem from my surroundings, experiences, and encounters with people.
