Six nursing students in hot pink saris sitting at a bus stop. A day laborer sweeping a courtyard, a broom in each hand. Women chatting as they clean fish in a busy market At every turn, Chennai, a city in South India, richly rewards spectators of everyday life. Since I first came to the city four years ago to teach for a semester at a local college, I’ve sketched such scenes; sometimes on the spot, other times by memory. I transfer these little sketches to an art app on my iPad to enlarge them and add color and depth, often with layers of transparent photos, also shot in Chennai. It’s a way to capture the city’s vitality and moments of beauty. I’m beginning to apply the same technique to sketches made in Baltimore.
