Valentina Soto-Ruiz
Valentina Soto-Ruiz is a Latinx artist currently residing in Baltimore pursuing a BFA in Photography with minors in Book Arts and Sustainability & Social Practice at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Growing up in Medellin, a city built over the Aburrae and all Emberá Peoples’ ancestral lands, and regularly visiting the Colombian countryside as a child has led her to explore the interactions between humans and nature through photography and bookmaking. In 2018, she graduated from Montgomery College with an AAS in Photography. For the past two years, through documentary and conceptual themes, her practice has dealt with the preservation of memory, the deconstruction of cultural identity and acculturation, and socio-environmental issues. Her work has been exhibited at the Media Arts Gallery in Montgomery College, the Gateway Gallery, Rosenberg Gallery, and Wilgus Gallery at MICA, as well as Terrault Contemporary and Flip Gallery in the city of Baltimore.
